Scrabo Go the Distance at Down Royal

Posted: 1/9/2020

Saturday 22nd August saw race four of the ChampionChip Ireland Race Series 2020 with a 5k, 10k and Half Marathon being held with strong fields in each of the races with athletes from Northern Ireland, Ireland and Great Britain participating. Although the weather was changeable and challenging at times it certainly did not affect enthusiasm or performances with Striders competing in each of the three distances. In the 5k Dave Stevenson was first Strider home continuing his great form in the series with a new personal best over the distance in a time of 18:25, Norman Mawhinney was second home 19:32 with Liz Turton following in 25:21 to continue her fine performances in the series.

In the 10k Dave Stevenson was the first Strider home in 47:24 closely followed by Norman Mawhinney in 48:19 to follow up their great performances earlier in the day. Claire Thomson was the lone lady Strider in the 10k with a great time of 58:39 following on from her previous race in the series at Glenarm.

The last race of the day was the Half Marathon with four Striders taking part, Dave Stevenson was first home in a 1:31:23 to complete a perfect set for the day closely followed by Norman Mawhinney in 1:32:37 who also completed all three races on the day! Andy Haylett in his first outing in a purple vest was next home in a new personal best of 1:32:43 with Neil Mearns following in a time of 1:45:40 to complete a strong showing from club in the race. As just rewards for a day’s hard racing Norman and Dave now sit in 2nd and 6th places respectively in the overall race series rankings.
