Kit Corner - Be Safe Be Seen

Posted: 28/11/2016

Welcome to ‘Kit Corner’.

The aim of ‘Kit Corner’ is to give you an insight in to the shoes, clothing and equipment available for runners of all abilities, in order that you continue running in all weathers and conditions to improve your performance, health and wellbeing.

When it comes to your running kit, the golden rule is "quality over quantity." You don’t have to break the bank on a wardrobe full of new stuff, but you won’t regret investing in a few well selected basics. They’ll ensure that you’re more comfortable, no matter how far or how fast you go.

As the nights are rapidly getting darker and colder, over the next few weeks I’ll be focusing on a head to toe kit list to keep you on the road.

Reflective gear

If you run before sunrise on your own or after sunset with the Scrabo Striders, it’s critical to wear the right gear that ensures that you can be seen. At the very least, wear a reflective vest.

There are many kinds of lights out there, from head torches, to lights that clip on to your shoes, clip on to the back of your cap, snap around your arm and LEDs that flash. Your best bet is a handheld light or a head torch. Drivers will see the light, but they’ll also sense the movement and figure out that you’re a runner.

For winter, make sure you have a warm hat that covers your ears.

A running windproof jacket is made of technical, breathable materials, insulating your body from the outside temperature and especially keeping out the wind. Some wind proofs are also waterproof, repelling water and keeping your body dry even when it's raining.

We’re all different, some of us may need gloves at the start of a run, then, want to pop them in their pocket, others leave them on, with the remainder being too tough for gloves (not me by the way). Again, each to their own; gloves are a personal thing. Just remember, it’s the extremities that will always lose the most heat the quickest.
