Last Weekend in March, Striding in the Sun!
The sun is out and brighter nights are upon us!!
Members took full advantage of the glorious weekend weather by running at four local Parkruns, the very popular 5 km races held on Saturday mornings across the country. Eighteen members participated in two runs in North Down and two events in East Belfast on the 25th.
First lady home in the Bangor Parkrun, held at Ward Park, was Sharon Andrews and the first gent was Ian McPhillips both with impressive times. Then followed Colin Harper, Carol Bailie, Steven Craythorne, Karen Farrelly and Neil McCormick. The Bangor run had over 330 runners in attendance. The Comber Parkrun is held at Parkway and three members ran, namely Nigel Martin, Sara Amanda Martin and Sheena Crone. Good effort by all.
In East Belfast the Stormont race attracted 178 runners. The first Strider to complete the course was Mark Leathem and first lady Carleen Seeger. Then Oliver Seeger, Gary Clarke, Stephen Campbell, Karen Clarke and Janice Irvine. At the Victoria Park event the club was represented by Ian Frazer. Good to see those purple vests cruising round the course!
Parkrun organise free weekly 5 km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone and are fun, safe and easy to take part in. More information can be found at www.parkrun.org.uk
Another 5km timed race was “Jog Belfast” held on Sunday 26th March in Ormeau Park. Six super Striders competed with Scot Knight first home for the gents and Christine Lougheed first for the ladies. Then came Emma Drysdale, Rachel Tully Murdock, Kim Cochrane and Emma Moreland.
The next event at which you can catch a glimpse of a purple shirt whizzing past is the Subway Holywood Exchange 10k and Half Marathon, this Sunday April 2nd. Now is the time to start training for the big event, The Ards Half Marathon at the end of June, at which we hope to see a sea of purple. If you would like to join a fun and enthusiastic running club suitable for all abilities then come on down to training on a Monday and Wednesday night, 7:15 pm at Londonderry Park. You will be made very welcome.
