Scrabo Striders Fund Raising in Fancy Dress, Taking Titanic Challenge

It was a fun-packed weekend for our members, from Parkruns right through to Dinosaur Runs.

The 2017 Pie & Pieathon took place in Whitehead on Saturday 9th September, where runners mostly in fancy dress completed a four mile route with a pit stop every mile to drink a pint and eat a small pie. Wine was available for those who preferred!

Four miles, four pies, four pints and fancy dress made the event a load of fun, as entrants raised money for a sensory room for life limited children on behalf of the Hope House Charity. Seven Scrabo Striders took part namely Gareth Clarke, Gary Clarke, Andrea Cairns, Ronnie Geddis, Caroline Smyth, Chris Stevenson and Neil McCormick who completed the challenge dressed as a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Well done all.

On Sunday 10th the Belfast Telegraph RunHer 5K and 10K road races returned, with the landmark Titanic Belfast building forming the backdrop to the race start, with runners then heading around the Titanic Quarter, taking in the sights of Harland & Wolff's Samson and Goliath cranes, before heading off to circuit Victoria Park and back to the finish.

Our ladies put in a great effort with Caroline Dwyer first home in the 10K event in just over 50 minutes followed by Amanda Martin and Deborah Erskine in under the hour. Just over the hour by a few seconds was Catherine Lavery followed by Donna Dugan, Kathleen Henderson, Joanne Wray, Sharon Hunsdale and Lesleyann Morrow. Denise Nodder, Alison James and Amanda Stewart all ran the 5K event in under 33 minutes. Great pre-race pic and a fantastic display of purple power.

The ever popular Parkruns continue. At Ward Park in Bangor the club had four entrants with Sharon Andrews first home for the ladies and Mervyn Kinney for the gents. Then came Carol Bailie and Wendy Thompson. At Comber first gent finisher was Ian McCallister and Andrea Surplus for the ladies with a new personal best, followed by Owen Armstrong (new PB), Amanda Martin and Michael Brown (new PB).

At Stormont Parkrun Oliver Seeger was the club’s first finisher with a new personal best, under 25 minutes for this course, followed by Michael Honeyman. Our first lady was Nicola Honeyman followed by Stephen Campbell and Kathryn Chesney with a new PB. Well done all completing in under 30 minutes. Connor and Nicola McNamara ran the Victoria Parkrun in East Belfast for the first time, where Mark Leathem was the first Strider across in under 23 minutes. Catherin Lavery ran the Waterworks event in under 30 minutes while Andrea Da Silva completed Ormeau in just over thirty minutes.

Great effort by everyone!
