On Saturday 17th February the 2018 Last One Standing (LOS) endurance running event took place in the grounds of Castle Ward, Co. Down. Organised by ATLAS Running, runners have one hour to complete a 4.2 mile loop through forest trails and be at the start line ready to go again at 1pm, then again at 2pm and so on. Any runner not finished within the hour gets disqualified and this repeats every hour until there is only one runner left, the Last One Standing!

The event finished at approximately 11pm on Sunday, with the Winner Peter Cromie having run for nearly 35 hours and 147 miles! We had eight entrants in this brutal competition. Andrea Cairns completed 5 laps having bravely battled injury, Graeme McGowan and Mick Honeyman completed 8 laps, Chris Stevenson 9 laps and Garry Cavill and Ricky Jordan 13 laps. The club’s last lady standing was Shannon Clegg completing 14 laps and a total distance of 58.8 miles. The club’s last man standing was Kieran McNamara having completed 17 laps and a distance of 71.4 miles. Amazing is the only word!

The committee would like to thank our phenomenal competitors who showed true grit and determination as well as the army of supporters round the clock, helping to make this a truly memorable event. I’m sure Scrabo Striders will have even more entrants in 2019!

Also on Saturday the sixth race in the Run Forest Run Series took place at Gosford Forest Park, Co. Armagh. The course is a mixture of road and forest track through dense woodland, past Gosford Castle which has featured in Game of Thrones. Scrabo Striders Jared Marin came 3rd overall in 17 minutes 19 seconds in the 5K race followed by Jonathan Keenan, Amanda Martin, Christine Lougheed, Kim Cochrane and Rex McCormick. In the 10K event Justin Clegg was the first Strider to finish in just over 47 minutes followed by Nigel Martin, Adrian Boyd, Linda Dugan, Steven McCormick and Rhonda Magowan. Well done all.

In other events Gary Hunsdale, Colin Harper, Emmanuel Farrelly and Rachel Tully completed the challenging trail race circuit at Castle Ward and in the 5 mile Donard Wood Trail Race in Newcastle Jared Martin took overall 7th place in a little over 35 minutes, followed by his father Nigel Martin.

With the running season starting to kick off again Scrabo Striders still managed to put in a good show at the Saturday morning Parkruns, the weekly 5km timed races open to all. At Comber Curtis McCaw took overall 1st place in 17 minutes 41 seconds followed by Robin Adams with a new personal best (PB) time, then came Liz Turton, Ashley Gilliland (PB), Nicola McNamara, Grace Pollock (PB), Eileen Pollock and Karen Hewitt.

Paul and Lynn Sheldon both recorded new personal bests at the Castlewellan Parkrun, while Mark Lethem and Barry Tate represented the club for the first time at Wallace Park and Victoria Parkruns respectively. At Stormont Gary Clarke was the first Scrabo Strider to finish with a new PB of 24 minutes 1 second followed by Olli Seeger, Wendy Thompson, Sharon Graham, Laura Cooke and Christine Kirkwood.

We are proud and excited to announce the club’s first open race. On Friday 27th April at 6:30 pm the first “Run the Runways” races will take place at Newtownards Airfield. Comprising a 5K, a 10K and a kids 1K race the perfectly flat, unique personal best course is sure to appeal to runners of all ages and abilities. Distances are officially measured and runners will be chip-timed. Registration is now open via the Athletics NI website, with an early bird deal until the end of February. Hope to see you there!
